Gregory Fernandez, 32, of Yonkers, attempted suicide on Aug. 28 and died on Sept. 1, from his injuries, said Justin Pruyne, a spokesman for the Department of Correction.

Emergency medical care was provided at the jail, and Fernandez was transported to Westchester Medical Center for further treatment, Pruyne said.

Fernandez had been in custody for two days for felony robbery and a weapons possession charge, he added.

He was being held without bail on an order from the Yonkers City Court and on an associated parole warrant, Pruyne said.

Pruyne said the death is under investigation, as "a normal course of practice."
